CreaClip - Review

Tuesday, June 21, 2011
Hey Girls,

If you may have been read my previous posts, you would be aware of my obsession with my hair. With the kind of thick, dense hair, I have, I need to trim it regularly, maybe sometimes every 8 weeks. If I don't get my hair trimmed regularly, I get a lot of split ends and the ends of my hair look like really dried and unruly. Going for haircuts every 8 weeks used to get very annoying for me. I tried to trim my hair myself at home, but most of the times ended up with uneven hair chopped in the wrong manner due to slip of comb used for trimming or wrongly moving the scissors.

So after reading a lot of great reviews about CreaClip, I decided to get one for myself. I received it a few days back, and gave a try yesterday. I can only say its a wonderful and very innovative product, perfect for those who don't like to go to salon every month for haircuts and trims.

Well, here's the review.

The Two Clips

A closer look at the tiny comb like bristles

The Locking Technique in the Clip. White Clip is open and blue clip is closed.

The liquid filled bubbles to ensure that clip is closed straight

Availability - Can be purchased only online at CreaClip
Price - $ 29.99 excluding Postage and Handling.

My experience with CreaClip

My hair is not very long and falls 2-3 inches below my shoulders. I have hair cut is 3 steps so I used the smaller blue clip. After parting my hair in the middle, I divided my hair as per the 3 steps which i already had and then trimmed it. Though its a bit time consuming, but nothing compared to the 1 hour I had to spend at the Salon for my haircuts. The steps trimmed without the blue clip moving even once and all I got was fabulous hair.

I did not use the bigger white clip but will be experimenting with on a friend of mine who has waist length hair. Stay tuned for update on that.

The Good about it:
  • No need to wet hair for using CreaClip. But I would suggest you to wash your hair, let it air dry and then use it. I have wavy and thick hair so I prefer to use CreaClip on the same day when I wash my hair. Washing hair smoothens out hair and that would make working with much more easier.
  • The large number inbuilt comb bristles gives a good locking grip to the clip, helping to hold steady without you having to hold the comb. Having a free hand gives an extra advantage.
  • CreaClip holds your hair tightly due to its locking system and the clip wont move unless open it or slide it out of your hair.
  • I have hair cut is 3 steps so I used the smaller blue clip. After parting my hair in the middle, I divided my hair as per the 3 steps which i already had and then trimmed it. Though its a bit time consuming, but nothing compared to the 1 hour I had to spend at the Salon for my haircuts. The steps trimmed easily without the blue clip moving even once and all I got was fabulous hair.
  • The clips are quite thin and can be stored and carried easily.
  • The clips are made of plastic and that makes them very less prone to breaking due to falling.
  • The clips, especially the blue clip can be used by men too for haircuts.
  • Saves a lot of money on haircuts and trims.

The Not so Good about it :
  • Not available in India and can be purchased only through CreaClip website.
  • Price is a bit high, but you end up saving a lot on hair cuts and trims.
Check out a video of how beautifully Latina Inglesa cuts her hair and gets a great new look.

I can't wait till to try this look now! But have to wait till my hair gets a bit longer.

Pomegranate Cream Lip Gloss

Pomegranate Butter (Pomegranate Fruit, Shea Butter, Jojoba Oil), Castor Seed Oil, Beeswax, Carnauba Wax, Glycerin (Veg.), Lecithin (Veg.), Jojoba Protein HP, Organic Sunflower Seed Oil, Natural Vitamin E and Vitamin C, Grapefruit Seed Extract, Mica and Iron Oxide.

Quantity: 0.30 oz.
Price: $7
Availability - Can be purchased only from Website.

Its one of the best lip gloss which I have used till now. Most lip glosses are either too sticky or very sheer and don't stay on lips for more then an hour. Pomegranate Cream Lip Gloss is very smooth and moisturizing and at the same time it has a very good staying power.  The colour of the lip gloss is a very bright fuschia pink but once applied, it gives a very beautiful pink glossy look to the lips. This gloss does not settle into the fine lines and provides a nice moisturized effect without being sticky at all. In fact, it can even be used as a tinted lip balm. The staying power is quite good for a gloss which is so moisturizing and it stayed on my lips for around 3 hours, with occasional sips of water and coffee. I washed my face with water and after that too, I could notice that the colour was not completely washed with water and left a slight tint on my lips.

Swatch

The Good about Pomegranate Cream Lip Gloss
  • No harmful Ingredients. The ingredients list says it all.
  • Decently Priced.
  • Very Moisturizing

  • Leaves a nice subtle tint even after  i washed my face with water.

The Not so Good Pomegranate Cream Lip Gloss
  • Comes in a jar/tub packaging
  • May melt a little at high temperature.
  • Not available in India.
  • Can be purchased only through website.

Lip Gloss Glaze - Rose Garden
A beautiful peach gloss with pink undertones. Like you can see from the swatch below, it can be applied sheer for that hint of colour. It can be easily build up to give a nice peach colour to lips.

Ingredients:
Certified Organic Jojoba Oil, Castor Seed Oil, 100% Pure Vegetable Glycerin, Lecithin (Vegetable Source), Natural Vitamin E, Grapefruit Seed Extract, Beeswax, Carnauba Wax, Allantoin, Titanium Dioxide, Mica and Iron Oxide.

Price: $7
Availability - Can be purchased only from Website.

Left - Swatched once and applied with applicator, Right - Swatched Twice
My Experience with Lip Gloss Glaze - Rose Garden

I am very fond of wearing light shades of gloss because i have thick lips and bright and bold colours dont suit me well. The lip gloss glaze is not at all sticky and gives a nice coverage. I have light lips but this will give a decent amount of coverage to pigmented lips as well. The gloss is neither too much nor too less, just the right amount to give a nice shine to lips.

The Good about Lip Gloss Glaze - Rose Garden
Moisturizing and nice colour payoff.
Decently Priced.
Nice subtle shimmer and lips would'nt look like a disco ball :-P
Can be worn sheer or build up for a nice pigmented colour.
Would help to provide decent coverage to pigmented lips also.
Comes in a tube packaging with regular doe foot applicator, which makes it travel friendly too.

The Not so Good about Lip Gloss Glaze - Rose Garden
  • Not available in India.
  • Can be purchased only through website.

Makari De Suisse Clarifying Exfoliating Antiseptic Soap

Tuesday, June 14, 2011
A few days back I Had received a lovely bag of sample products from Makari. It contained these -
  • 2 Makari Whitening Exfoliating Soap of 30 grams/1.05 oz each
  • 2 sachets of Makari Creme Clear - Acnyl Cream
Box containing the Samples

A peep inside the Box

Today I will be reviewing Makari De Suisse Clarifying Exfoliating Antiseptic Soap. I have used this soap for 10 days now. Time for the review.

A soap for face ?? I am surenot many of us would hate the idea of using a soap on delicate facial skin, but Makari De Suisse Clarifying Exfoliating Antiseptic Soap is an exception.

Lets take a closer look at the Soap

Source - Makari Website

About Makari

Makari (pronounced muh-ka-ree) is a premium skin whitening and clarifying brand that was primarily created to fulfil the needs of the coloured population in the US and Europe. The Makari range of products are high end and formulated to work on female as well as male skins. Our skin whitening & clarifying products have been tested by the University of Montpellier for safety and efficacy.

The Makari brand was created about a decade ago by New York based entrepreneur Jack Aini in partnership with a renowned Belgian chemist Maurice Bertrand. It is their partnership that has created Makari, the worlds largest range of skin care products specifically for Whitening and Clarifying. All our products are manufactured as per GMP guidelines (for the pharmaceutical industry) at our facility in Aigle in the Swiss canton of Vaud. Our products adhere to the strictest norms in quality applicable in Europe and the US, which makes us the preferred skin care whitening product in those 2 continents.

People with skin problems such as hyper-pigmentation, melasma, liver spots, age spots, stretch marks etc had to make do with products that either had a very high chemical content to make them effective (and also loaded with harmful side effects) or had formulations that were so mild that they rarely had any effect. Makari was created with a vision to formulate products that were natural, safe and affordable and at the same time very effective.

The main Whitening agent for Makari products is Vegeclarine. Vegeclarine is a 100% natural plant extract and is a very effective skin Whitening and Clarifying agent. Makari also has a range of skin care products that use Caviar Extracts in addition to Vegeclarine to combine the needs of consumers for Whitening and Ageing. Caviar has been proven to reduce the incidence of age and expression lines making the skin plumper, more supple and makes you look younger. Makari products are available at its stores in Paris, Brussels and New York. Our products are also available in over 50 countries worldwide. We hope that you have an enriching experience after using our products.

About Makari Clarifying Exfoliating Soap
Thanks to its natural properties, this Triple action soap helps provide you with the complexion you aspire to. The soap offers an ideal treatment to prepare the skin for the enhanced effectiveness of the entire range of Makari de Suisse Skin Clarifying products.

Elaeis Guineensis (Palm) Kernel Acid
Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Kernel Extract

Price - Rs. 800 for 200 grams

My Experience with the Makari Soap

I used the soap on my face as well as body. True to its claim, it can be used on all skin types. I have normal to dry body skin whereas my face has a mix and match of different types of skins. My T-zone is very oily and within 30 minutes of washing my face, my nose starts to shine like a disco ball. On the other hand, my cheeks are very dry and need intense hydration even in harsh summers. After using this soap on my face, My dry patches felt only slightly stretchy. A tiny dab of moisturizer and I was happy.

The soap has a very nice fragrance. When I first opened the box, I could smell fragrance even from outside the pouch in which it was placed. The fragrance may be a bit strong for someone with a sensitive nose, but I am not complaining. Coming to the exfoliation part, the exfoliation beads are a bit sparse for me because I like my exfoliating products which have a large quantity of exfoliation. The beads were pretty gentle till first few uses. But after about 6-7 uses, I felt like the beads were quite abrasive and could scratch skin if rubbed strongly.  The best way to use this is to wet your hands and rub soap in between them and then apply on skin. I had tiny bumps on my forehead which were not exactly acne but numerous home remedies and creams  did not cure them. After using this soap, I could see a drastic improvement in texture of skin on my forehead.

The tiny black particles are the exfoliating beads

The good about the Makari De Suisse Clarifying Exfoliating Antiseptic Soap

  • The fragrance is too good. (Heavenly!!) The fragrance feels so refreshing in this hot muggy weather.
  • Can be used on all skin types. The dry patches on my face did not feel extremely dry compared to other soaps (which I used years ago for face)
  • The soap is very mild and did not lead to acne, break outs.
  • The Blackheads on my super oily nose also vanished.
  • I had tiny bumps on my forehead which were not exactly acne but numerous home remedies and creams  did not cure them. After using this soap, I could see a drastic improvement in texture of skin on my forehead.
  • I did not get any new pimples since I have been using this soap.
  • Gives a squeaky clean feeling.
  • The hexagonal shape makes it easier to use.
  • Does not melt much in water.

The BAD about the Makari De Suisse Clarifying Exfoliating Antiseptic Soap
  • Price - The price is a bit too much for a soap.
  • Available only through online.
To buy or not to buy ?
Yes, my only hope is they give 50% discount on all products, so I can stock upon them. :-P

If you want to try Makari products, without burning a hole in your pocket, try their samples bag for just Rs. 300/- The bag contains
  • Two 5 ml sachets of Clarifying Cream
  • Two 5 ml sachets of Anti-Acne Cream
  • One 50 gm Whitening and Exfoliating Soap

For your Hands only

Saturday, June 11, 2011

You know that chemical peels, microdermabrasion and mesotherapy work wonders for your face. But are you aware that today the same treatments are being used to give your hands a rehab? Priti Salian tells you how your nearest skin clinic can help you maintain great looking hands "Damage on the hands could appear in the form of wrinkling, loss of elasticity, textural changes, hyper pigmentation, volume loss and prominent 'ropy' veins," says Dr Jamuna Pai, Cosmetic Physician and Founder, Blush Clinics. While a lot of these changes can be handled with regular care at home (check our article 'Youthful Handover'), some of them do need expert attention. Consult your dermatologist if you see signs of ageing before thirty. And if your hands are someone else's envy even at thirty, begin taking some of these treatments right away. They deserve to be pampered!

Treatments for prevention
"Chemical peels, microdermabrasion and mesotherapy are preventive treatments which you can start taking at 30," says Dr Sharad.
Chemical peels Collagen and elastin fibres begin to degenerate as we age and can be prevented with lactic acid and glycolic acid peels. Lactic acid, which is an alpha hydroxyl acid obtained from fermented milk helps maintain skin pH and moisturises the dry skin on the hands thoroughly. Both these peels also stimulate the formation of new collagen and remove the pigment on the upper layers of the skin easily. So as soon as you see the first dark spot on your hands, rush to a good skin clinic for one of these peels. One session every month could cost you Rs. 1000-1500 and ten sessions are recommended.
Microdermabrasion removes dead skin so that creams penetrate your skin well after that. Taking one session every three months helps. You'll need to pay about Rs. 1500 for a session.

Mesotherapy involves injections of vitamins, nutrients and some other products after anaesthetising the skin. Apart from giving a healthy look with a good amount of hydration, it also generates new collagen for a tighter skin. Four to five sessions costing Rs. 5000 each can work wonders.
Treatments for damaged hands If your hands are showing gross ageing signs and you are touching 40, these treatments could help you.
Laser Resurfacing restores the collagen and elastin in your hands. Half an hour sessions four to five times show great results. After treatment, you could experience some redness, swelling and tiny scabs which disappear in a day. Each session costs Rs. 5000-7000.

Ferulic Acid Peel which costs Rs 3000 per session stimulates new collagen formation and helps in tightening the skin. The Obagi Blue Peel costing Rs. 20,000 per session is also a good option to reduce pigmentation and fine lines.
Radiofrequency is a procedure where the deeper layer of skin is heated without damaging the skin surface to tighten and remodel the collagen. Cost- Rs. 2500-3000 per session.

Dermal fillers like Restylane and Juvederm when injected into the skin absorb the surrounding water and increase in volume, thus making the skin appear plumper. The procedure takes less than 20 minutes and the effect can last for one to two years, longer than it does on the face. Fewer muscles at the back of your hands means less muscular activity which can break down and dissolve the filler, thus making it last. Cost - Rs. 30,000 onwards.

"Fillers with a combination of skin tightening lasers can work wonders on the area," says Dr Pai. So don't throw up your hands in despair when you see fine lines, you know you can treat them now!

Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser

Wednesday, June 8, 2011
I have been using the Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser for almost a week now and my sample product is almost over. So, this calls for a review.

About Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser
We only make one cleanser because this formulation is the ultimate in concentrated yet gentle cleansing power and works on every age and skin type.

Our plant-based cleanser has a 2-phase action, phase 1 is the cleansing. Free from mineral oil, it has a rich and creamy texture and swiftly removes all traces of face and eye make-up, even stubborn mascara.
Phase 2 is the polishing. Polish off the cream using the pure muslin cloth to help gently dislodge dead skin cells and help reveal clean, soft and radiant skin.

Naturally active ingredients include eucalyptus and cocoa butter for smoother, clearer skin.

Suitable for all skin types

Here's what I received from Liz Earle

Add caption

Naturally active ingredients

Cocoa Butter (Theobroma cacao) - This rich, creamy butter which has moisturising effects on the skin is made from the roasted seeds of the cocoa tree, the same seeds that give us chocolate and cocoa.

Hops Extract (Humulus lupulus) - This herbal extract comes from the pinecone-like fruit of the hop plant and has astringent and toning properties.

Rosemary Essential Oil/Extract (Rosmarinus officinalis) - This renowned and once sacred herb has been used for centuries in beauty preparations. Rosemary essential oil has a fresh pungent aroma and is very invigorating and stimulating. The extract has beneficial antioxidant properties.

Chamomile Essential Oil/Extract (Anthemis nobilis) - This herb takes its name from the Greek kamai (ground) and melon (apple) because of the sweet apple-like fragrance it releases when trodden on. The essential oil is considered a gentle oil by aromatherapists and medical herbalists have used chamomile for soothing the skin for centuries.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil (Eucalyptus globulus) - Native to Australia, eucalyptus shoots are a favourite food of the koala. The cooling essential oil produced from the leaves and twigs has decongestant properties and is used by aromatherapists to ease muscular aches and pains.

D-panthenol - Otherwise known as pro-vitamin B5, this B vitamin is necessary for the normal functioning of the skin and has a moisturising effect. It also helps stimulate cellular renewal.

Glycerin - The glycerin we use is always vegetable derived. It is a humectant (attracts water), drawing atmospheric water onto the skin to aid hydration.

Beeswax (Cera alba) - The beeswax used in Naturally Active Skincare comes from the honeycombs in which bees store their pollen. It has skin protecting properties and helps to relieve chapped skin.

Other ingredients

At Liz Earle Naturally Active Skincare we always try to use high quality, safe, naturally active ingredients. The other ingredients in this product are:

Aqua (water), Caprylic/capric triglyceride, Theobroma cacao (cocoa) seed butter, Cetearyl alcohol, Cetyl esters, Sorbitan stearate, Polysorbate 60, Glycerin, Cera alba (beeswax), Propylene glycol, Humulus lupulus (hops) extract, Panthenol, Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) extract, Anthemis nobilis (chamomile) extract, Eucalyptus globulus (eucalyptus) oil, Limonene, Citric acid, Sodium hydroxide, Phenoxyethanol, Benzoic acid, Ethylhexylglycerin, Dehydroacetic acid, Polyaminopropyl biguanide.

Instructions for Usage :

Cleanse daily morning and night using this two-step process:

Step 1: Massage 1 or 2 pumps gently onto dry skin over face and neck. Free from mineral oil, its rich and creamy texture swiftly removes all traces of face and eye make-up, including stubborn mascara.

Step 2: Rinse the pure muslin cloth in hand-hot water and wring out before gently polishing off the cream to gently remove dead skin cells and help reveal clean, soft and radiant skin.

Splash face with cool clean water and follow with Instant Boost Skin Tonic and your choice of moisturizer.

Cleansing - The Cleanser and Muslin Cloth
My take on Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser

  • I don’t wear makeup everyday, but to try its claim on removing stubborn makeup, I used it on my long stay lip colors. Needless to say, all the colours vanished in one single swipe.
  • Cleanser has a very refreshing eucalyptus fragrance.
  • After using the cleanser for only about a week, my skin looks more clearer. Previously, I used to think that deep cleansing is required only if one uses substantial amount of makeup everyday. I was so wrong!! The dirt, pollution, sweat form an invisible layer on the skin. Well, the first time I used this cleanser, I could not believe my eyes on seeing how much grime was there on my face, more on my oily T-zone.
  • The Blackheads on my oily T-zone, nose and forehead, have almost vanished.
  • A very little quantity, about a coin sized amount is required for entire face and neck. I was sent a 30ml sample tube and there is still a lot of cleanser left, which i think will last for another 5-6 days.
  • Leaves skin feeling smooth, squeaky clean and glowing. It works as an instant facial cleansing for me.
  • No oily feeling after cleansing with the cloth. Girls, you don’t have to be scared of using this in summers. After cleansing, my skin does not feel oily or sweaty.
  • My dry cheeks do not feel dry after cleansing. Most of the times, after cleansing I (purposely :-D) forget to moisturize my face, which is not so with normal cleansers and face washes.
  • The  pure muslin cloths are to be used gently and provide nice exfoliation for skin.
There is nothing which I don't like about this cleanser, except that it is not available in India. :-( But, I have found a solution for that too. My cousin, who happens to live in United Kingdom. :-P So, whenever, she decides to visit me, I know what to ask for.

A big thanks to the lovely Ms. Andrea Kengelbacher of Liz Earle for sending such a wonderful product for review. Visit Liz Earle here. Do read some more reviews about the Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser here.
